The winds of change were blowing hard, intruding on a life that was exactly the same, and no longer familiar; as if a subtle shift in space and time had taken place, leaving her slightly disoriented and ill at ease.
These feelings had been with her long before she made the very first trip to Omaha to enlist the services of Mitchell, but on this particular evening they'd grown until she became acutely aware of just how unsettled everything had become.
And as she slipped into a cocktail dress that showed off her figure to perfection her mood declined to a new low while her level of distress reached an all time high.
“What are you doing here?” she asked her mirror image self. She’d thought the life she had was the one she wanted, and until her husband’s evolving infatuation with Yvonne Lindley it had been. To balance things out she mistakenly thought that she could waltz Mitchell in front of her husband, treat him with impunity and emerge unscathed.
But now, here alone in this massive house that had never really been a home everything had changed, and the future was suddenly a blank page with storm clouds gathering on the horizon.
The house was too quiet, and in the lingering silence created by her own introspection she became apprehensive. The realization no sooner dawning than a slight movement in the dark corridor beyond her room caught her eye. The house was rigged to detect intrusion and the alarm was silent. It didn’t matter, she was suddenly aware of a chill in the air, and the feeling of being watched.
Her eyes flashed toward the opening and the hallway beyond, all other thoughts forgotten. “Is someone there?” she asked, dreading there should be a reply.
